9.24.10: Fathers and Sons

For some reason our ward decided to have a fathers and sons camp out in September, instead of the usual May like normal people.

Greg took Rex.

Upon arriving at the campsite, after driving around the campground for about 20 minutes looking for a familiar face (Greg finally realized it was a stake, not ward camp out), Greg set up the tent right along the tree line, far away from the camp fire and other distractions so as to allow Rex a decent night's sleep. While setting up the tent, Greg looks over and notices Rex eating berries off a tree. Oops. Greg decided to give one a nibble to make sure Rex wasn't going to die soon and that if he was going to die, Greg would die with him.

They were cherries.

After setting up the tent and spreading out the sleeping bags (after the last camping trip with Rex, Greg decided that the pack-n-play would be a waste of time, the boys ate the dinner they had purchased and packed for themselves--Swiss Miss chocolate rolls, saltine crackers, and sardines. Apparently Rex really enjoyed them.

Next, of course, was the camp fire. According to Greg, Rex sat in his appropriately-sized camping chair for a 'real long time' just staring at the fire.
At some point after dark when the camp fire on died down a bit, Greg and Rex went to bed, but that nice line of trees far away from the camp fire and distractions where Greg set up the tent was right next to a little path that the 'at least 80 kids ages 5 to 12' were using to go crazy on. Rex found it quite amusing when the kids shined their flashlights into the tent and would attack the light, which then freaked the kids out. At one point, one little kid even opened up the tent to see what was going on. I'm not sure if it's the same kid or not, but Greg said he confiscated one flashlight and took it apart.

So Greg and Rex went back to the camp fire for a while.

And then they tried to go to bed again, but to no avail.

By 9:30 pm they ended up here:

That's right. In our basement. But if you look to the left of Rex, you can see the new TV stand I put together while the boys were away camping.

They finished their camp out tonight by starting a fire in the backyard and roasting apples over it while I was at the Relief Society broadcast.
