So as it turns out Rex is a boy. A full-grown boy. Not even a little bit baby. The dead give-away was his dresser. I looked at it one day and realized it was the opening scene from The Sandlot. And Rex is Smalls. He's small. He can't catch a ball to save his life. And he's super smart. The only difference is that Smalls is respectful and Rex is a snot and a half, which I guess I deserve because I'm pretty snotty to him.
But I mean, look at all that full-grown boy stuff he has stashed on his dresser. It doesn't even bother me anyway (I hate clutter), I just love it--love how he's growing up, love how sweet and kind he is (except to Henry), love how the tries to do the right thing, love that he's created this collection of his treasures to display. I hope he stays this sweet and his dresser stays the same as he leaves childhood into the ever-unpleasant teenage hood.
Here's the other genuine, full-grown boy thing about Rex, piles and piles of chapter books. I took this picture when we hadn't been to the library in a while but usually the space between his bed and dresser is completely full of books. He'll read for hours. After he's used all his TV time for the day, he just sits and reads. He reads all night. He reads when he's supposed to be getting dressed, brushing his teeth, doing his chores, eating. He's basically always reading. It's becoming pretty hard for me to find books for him to read because while his reading level is advanced, his interest level is not--he's still only 8 and likes to read about 8-year-old things. When I go to the library these days I fill one bag for just Rex, and one bag for the other kids.
He also had a choir concert at school. It was pretty cute. He was concerned that they would mess up at this one part in this one song--they did, exactly where he said they would. But we enjoyed listening anyway.
Our cute neighbor and his close friend is in his class.
I'm looking at the things on his dresser and thinking it could be Grant's. Lego, Rubik's Cube, temple picture, etc. My teenage boy has all those too and is still a pretty nice kid. I'm trying to stay positive about him heading to high school next fall because that seems to be the turning point for some of my kids. So far though his first year as a teenager has been pretty sweet. He's a non-sport reading guy too and I think that is perfectly okay.
